How Spotify pays in 2024 and what it means for independent artists

In 2024, Spotify introduced new payment thresholds and criteria, making it more difficult for independent artists to earn money from their work. On average, Spotify pays between $0.003 and $0.005 for each stream. However, minimum requirements for royalty generation have been established: artists must achieve at least 1,000 annual streams per song, with a minimum number of unique listeners to guarantee payments. This further reduces the monetization opportunities for emerging musicians, already penalized by an extremely competitive and saturated market.

New Monetization Thresholds

Spotify's new policies include a minimum threshold requiring songs to reach at least 1,000 annual streams. Making matters worse, the minimum number of unique listeners needed to receive royalties has not been clarified. This lack of transparency poses further difficulties for artists with small but loyal audiences, forcing them to look for other platforms to monetize their work. Furthermore, 19% of artists on Spotify surpassed 1,000 monthly listeners in 2023, highlighting that a large portion of musicians are having enormous difficulty earning money on this platform.

Content Saturation

In 2023, there were more than 158 million songs with fewer than 1,000 plays on Spotify, a clear demonstration of content saturation. Competition for visibility is fierce, and the new threshold imposed in 2024 automatically excludes many songs from the possibility of generating royalties. Essentially, artists who fail to meet Spotify's minimum requirements are excluded from the monetization circuit, ensuring that only content with the strongest engagement and fan bases can benefit from the revenue.

What are the alternatives to Spotify?

There are platforms that offer more advantageous payment models and promotion opportunities for independent artists:

  1. Bandcamp: Allows artists to directly sell their music and keep a much higher percentage than Spotify, with the added benefit of days when 100% of sales go directly to the artist.
  2. SoundCloud: Offers an active community and a monetization program, SoundCloud Premier, that allows artists to earn a higher percentage than Spotify.
  3. TIDAL: Distributes a higher percentage of revenue than Spotify, with a “direct-to-artist” model that rewards listening from loyal users.
  4. Deezer: Has introduced a “user-centric” payment model that distributes royalties based on users' personal preferences, ensuring fair compensation for the most followed artists.
  5. YouTube Music: Allows you to monetize your content through both the classic streaming model and your own YouTube channel, offering additional earning options through advertising and subscriptions.

I have been working for the past five years to ensure that DISTRID has over 150 alternative distribution channels. Bandcamp, SoundCloud, TIDAL, Deezer, YouTube Music, and many more are available in DISTRID's digital distribution offering!

How to adapt to Spotify's new regulations?

For independent artists, it is crucial to adapt to these new regulations and consider alternative strategies to increase revenue. Focusing on platforms with different payment models and trying to build a loyal fan base through live concerts, direct sales, and music syncs may be a more sustainable path.

It's also important to invest in targeted promotional campaigns and cultivate your artistic brand. Platforms like SoundCloud and Bandcamp offer more direct interaction with fans, allowing artists to better showcase their music. Furthermore, some platforms like TIDAL and Deezer reward the quality and authenticity of content, so producing high-quality tracks and promoting them organically remains a winning strategy.
