How many times have you wondered why, despite all the effort you put into your songs, things just don't really take off? In this article, I want to clearly and directly address the main reasons why so many artists find themselves stalled after their first releases. We'll discuss strategy, content, common mistakes, and, above all, how to avoid wasting time, energy, and budget on promotional activities that don't yield results.
Do you have a plan… or just a series of posts?
The main problem I see on a daily basis in working with artists and small labels is the lack of a structured strategy. You release tracks, maybe use “spot” promotion services, do a couple of advertising campaigns… and then you stop. You look at the number of plays and think: “Non ha funzionato.”
But the right question is: What goal did you want to achieve? And again: What tools did you use to measure it?
A strategy isn't just a to-do list. It's a long-term vision. It starts with specific objectives and builds on conscious choices: where and how to publish, what content, what budget to allocate, which channels to use, how to create and maintain attention.
Without targeted content, there is no effective promotion.
Music is content. But it's not enough to have it, you need to know how to communicate it.
A common mistake is to think that publishing a well-produced song and maybe a couple of posts on Instagram for “spingerlo” is enough. In reality, a real content creation strategy is needed: what you produce, for whom, with what tone, in what format, on which platforms.
Effective content must be:
- Consistent with your artistic project
- Recognizable and differentiating
- Built to attract and retain attention
A trailer, a clip, or a story on IG shouldn't just “esserci”, but communicate something clearly, authentically, and instantly distinguishable from everything else already flooding your followers' feeds.
The only currency that matters: attention
We live in the age of the infodemic. There's no shortage of audiences, but attention spans are limited, and every second spent on your content is a privilege. That's why building a solid fanbase isn't a matter of luck, but of consistency and strategy.
It takes time. You need to test content, learn what works, perfect your tone of voice, and build your personal brand step by step. But above all, you need to know why you're doing everything: every post, every reel, every ad, every communication.
How do you build a real strategy?
Start with a big goal—like growing your real, active fanbase—and break it down into small, concrete steps:
- Increase streams for a single song
- Increase the number of followers on a specific channel
- Increase engagement on published content
- Bring new users to your Spotify or YouTube page
These steps must be tackled one at a time, with precise planning. Only in this way will you be able to evaluate whether your promotional activities are working and adjust your focus as you go.
