The reality is that most of these cases do not concern real collaborations with major record labels, but distribution services provided by affiliate companies or technical partners such as ADA, Ingrooves, The Orchard or BeatStars.
ADA is not a Warner contract
ADA (Alternative Distribution Alliance) is the independent distribution division of the Warner Music group. It offers digital and physical distribution services to independent labels and artists, but does not represent a recording contract with Warner Music.
Many “manager” or Italian agencies improperly use the name ADA to boast of having a “accordo Warner”, confusing (or pretending to confuse) the role of a distributor with that of a real record company. ADA provides delivery tools and services, without direct involvement of Warner A&R or promotional structures. In short: “ADA is not a Warner deal.”
Ingrooves is not Universal
Ingrooves is a distribution company owned by Universal Music Group, but operates independently. It distributes catalogs of independent artists, offering analytics and marketing services, but does not sign artists on behalf of Universal. Saying “contratto con Universal tramite Ingrooves” actually means a digital distribution deal, not a record deal with the major label.
The Orchard is not Sony
The Orchard is owned by Sony Music Entertainment and is a global aggregator and distributor for independent labels. It manages thousands of labels, but only a portion of the artists it distributes actually have a record deal with Sony Music. The ambiguous use of the term “Sony / The Orchard” fuels confusion.
BeatStars: a platform, not a label
BeatStars is a global platform for selling and sharing beats, which has activated technical integrations for distribution to digital stores (including through partners). Distributing through BeatStars is not the same as having a contract with Warner or ADA: it is the use of a platform that relies on technical partners.
Comparison chart: who they really are and what they offer
| Name | Ownership / Group | Service Type | What They Offer | They Are NOT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ADA | Warner Music Group | Independent distribution | Digital delivery, marketing tools, store access | Warner label |
| Ingrooves | Universal Music Group | Independent distribution | Distribution, analytics, basic promotional services | Universal label |
| The Orchard | Sony Music Entertainment | Global aggregator | Distribution, catalog management, sync | Sony label |
| Virgin Music Group | Universal Music Group | Label services / distribution | Marketing support, artist services | Universal contract |
| BeatStars Distribution | Partner integrations (e.g. ADA) | Online platform | Distribution via API/partner | Warner label or sublabel |
The Italian case: resellers and “finte etichette major”
In Italy, many resellers, pseudo-labels and agencies offer “via ADA”, “via The Orchard” or “tramite Ingrooves” services, using multinational logos without authorization. They often do not have direct contracts with the major labels, but resell foreign services at high margins, making artists believe they are on the Warner, Sony or Universal roster.
Sometimes graphically misleading contracts appear, where the major label logos are present in the layout but not in the legal text. This is incorrect behavior that exploits the enthusiasm of emerging artists.
How to understand if you have a real contract “major”
- Direct signature with the parent company (not an intermediary).
- Advance or production/promotion budget.
- Involvement of an official A&R or Product Manager.
- Radio and press campaigns managed by the label.
- Royalties paid directly by the major label.
If these elements are missing, it is most likely simple technical distribution or a resold service.
