Spotify Wrapped: the music celebration that divides audiences

Every year-end, with the arrival of December, Spotify Wrapped presents itself as a highly anticipated event for users of the platform, eager to discover and share their listening habits of the year. However, beyond the enthusiasm it generates, the phenomenon has raised criticism and perplexity, shedding light on lesser-known aspects.

The Origin and Success of Spotify Wrapped

Launched in 2015 under the name “Music in a Year”, Wrapped became a viral hit just two years later, evolving into a campaign that transformed music statistics into a global event. Thanks to its ability to create an emotional connection with users and stimulate social media sharing, Wrapped is an extraordinarily effective marketing tool for Spotify. It's hard to think of any other campaign capable of maintaining such a level of popularity for seven consecutive years.

An Event for Users, Not Artists

While Wrapped provides visibility to the most listened to artists, its primary purpose is to promote Spotify as a platform. The campaign leverages users’ personal data to create engaging presentations that fuel the so-called “FOMO” effect (fear of being left out), prompting millions of people to share them.

However, this emphasis on marketing ignores fundamental problems in the music industry. Many artists continue to complain about insufficient compensation for streaming, while Spotify Wrapped presents an idealized image of the music industry, overlooking the economic and creative struggles of those who produce music.

The Role of the Algorithm

Wrapped celebrates the most streamed songs and artists, but the criteria that determine these results are heavily influenced by Spotify's algorithm. This system, designed to suggest music similar to what users already enjoy, risks limiting the discovery of new genres and independent artists, reinforcing the centrality of major commercial successes and major labels.

Privacy Concerns

Another controversial issue concerns the use of personal data. Spotify Wrapped highlights how the platform monitors and analyzes users' listening habits, creating detailed profiles based not only on the songs they listen to, but also on data such as gender, geographic location, and even social class. While many users accept these practices, privacy experts raise questions about the ethics and legality of such data collection.

A celebration of music or marketing?

While Wrapped is celebrated as a tribute to music, it's more of a branding exercise for Spotify. The true essence of music—its creators, the emotions and stories it conveys—seems to take a back seat to listening and sharing metrics. Perhaps one day, Wrapped will be an opportunity to truly celebrate the art of music and its creators. Until then, it remains a controversial phenomenon, beloved by users but criticized by artists and industry experts.
