Every week I find myself faced with the same scene: an artist convinced they have “numeri bassi”, a few thousand streams… but when I seriously analyze their catalog, I discover a very different reality.
Undeclared royalties. Missed payments. Incorrect reports. Reports of “streaming artificiali” never contested. Distributors blocking revenues without any transparency.
And in most cases, the artist did nothing wrong.
The most absurd thing? Many of them had more than €2,000 in unpaid royalties. Some even tens of thousands of euros.

Since January 2025, we have witnessed a devastating phenomenon:
- DSPs reporting anomalous streams without proof.
- Distributors blocking accounts for no reason.
- Royalties disappearing for months.
- Disabled features like splits, collaborator management, and advanced reporting.
- Songs removed without warning.
And, even worse:
The culprit is almost never the artist.
Many cases are due to:
- suspicious playlists that the artist has unknowingly ended up in,
- third-party devices that listen to music on loop,
- distributor errors,
- internal algorithms that flag “fraud” even for real algorithmic streams of Spotify,
- lack of control over automatic reporting,
- delays in paying Master, Publishing, and Mechanical royalties.
The result? Unpaid or frozen royalties.
The royalties you are entitled to (and may not receive)
Most artists don't even know what types of royalties exist, and where they should be collected. And distributors do nothing to explain it to you.
Here's what you generate with every stream and every use:
1. Master Royalties (Sound Recording)
Paid by Spotify, Apple Music and all DSPs. The distributor collects them.
Many distributors:
- withhold royalties for “indagini in corso”,
- pay late,
- fail to report anomalies,
- fail to dispute DSP reports,
- make errors in their reports.
2. Publishing Royalties (Composition)
Made up of:
Performance Royalties Collected by SIAE/PRS/ASCAP/BMI etc. (in Italy: SIAE).
Mechanical Royalties Collected by MCPS (UK & International), MLC (USA), HFA (USA), Music Reports, CMRRA/SOCAN (Canada), AMCOS (Australia), UBC (Brazil), and other societies.
Many artists:
- only receive the “songwriter” share,
- do not receive the “publisher” share,
- do not have a registered publishing entity,
- are not registered with the right societies for the countries where they are streamed.
If 70% of your streams come from the US and you are only registered with SIAE, you could lose up to 50% of your royalties.
3. Digital Performance Royalties
- SoundExchange (USA)
- PPL (UK)
- SCF / SIAE in Italy
They pay for non-interactive digital performances (e.g. Pandora), certified web radio, etc.
Most artists aren't registered anywhere.
The point is simple: you're producing royalties that no one is paying you.
Either because you didn't register them in the right place. Or because the distributor isn't transferring them to you. Or because the DSP blocked something. Or because there's a suspicion of fraudulent streaming that has never been contested. Or because no one has connected your master, your composition, and your publishing entity.
And meanwhile: your money stays in the pockets of the DSPs, distributors, or collecting societies.
And when “streaming artificiali”'s suspicions arise… they take away the rest too
The paradox of 2025:
Innocent artists, with small but organic streams, are reported as “fraud” while those who pay professional bots often go untouched.
Result:
- Royalties frozen for 3–12 months,
- Songs removed,
- Accounts closed,
- Publishing not paid,
- Unpaid mechanics,
- Masters on hold.
All of this can easily translate into €2,000 – €20,000 unpaid, even for artists with low numbers.
A true (unfortunately common) story
A producer I recently worked with:
- 60 tracks uploaded over the years,
- 1.4 million total streams,
- had received less than €800 in total from his distributor.
After my analysis:
- had over €11,000 in unpaid royalties across Master, Mechanical, and Performance Royalties,
- 3 countries where it was not properly registered,
- metadata errors in the DSPs,
- failure to register works with 7 foreign companies,
- a block on the “streaming anomali” that was never contested.
